Our Story

Nikki and Gus met and immediately did not hit it off. Their first interactions were awkward, quiet, and honestly a little painfully uncomfortable. Contrary to popular belief, even though both of them are introverts, Gus quickly proved to be the more talkative and social one.

Somewhere between awkward conversations, shared playlists, and random late night talks, they found their rhythm together. They bonded over their love of reading, listening to J pop and K pop, and endlessly annoying each other with random facts. (For example: the inventor of cruise control was blind, which somehow feels exactly like the kind of fact they would bring up in the middle of an unrelated conversation.)

From Gus’ perspective, Nikki is proof that someone can be incredibly mean while somehow making it feel loving at the exact same time. He has never met someone so fierce, direct, and intimidating while also somehow being completely silent. She says exactly what she means, and somehow that honesty became one of the things he loves most about her.

Gus loves how Nikki is constantly reading. Countless books have been finished with tears practically gluing the pages together by the end. Together, they have attempted far too many TikTok recipes, listened to endless true crime podcasts, and slowly absorbed pieces of each other’s personalities over time.

Their relationship is built on small routines and playful arguments. They take turns cooking and debating who is NOT going to wash the dishes. Usually, a compromise is reached where one person washes while the other suffers through the equally dreaded task of folding and hanging clothes.

One of the things they love most about each other is how they can enjoy complete silence together while somehow also being the loudest people in the room. Nikki still remembers the first time Gus cussed in front of her. It immediately started raining afterward, which honestly felt dramatic enough to be written into the story on purpose.

Round 1 somehow became the accidental centerpiece of their relationship. Their first date happened there, the proposal happened there, and even their engagement photos were taken there. If it had been financially reasonable, they probably would have hosted the entire wedding there too. But after realizing how many thousands of dollars it would cost, they decided it would be smarter to have a wedding ceremony and reception instead… and save enough money to continue adopting countless emotional support plushies together.

With Gus’ help, Allison’s tiny Grinch heart has grown significantly larger. In return, Gus learned one of the most important lessons of their relationship: to leave the ringer on his phone.

At the center of everything, though, is the fact that they genuinely enjoy doing life together. Whether they are cooking, learning random new things, sitting quietly in the same room, loudly debating over absolutely nothing, or sharing all the latest tea, they are happiest simply being together.

At the end of the day, they found in each other exactly what they never expected: a best friend, a safe place, and a love story that somehow started with not liking each other at all.
